ACADEMIC SERBIAN ASSOCIATION HAS CELEBRATED ITS SECOND SLAVA IN A ROW
Academic Serbian Association has celebrated its second Slava and fifth anniversary
On October 27, 2021, the Academic Serbian Association celebrated the school’s Slava – Saint Petka, for the second year in a row, together with its fifth anniversary.
Slava is a Serbian national custom of glorification of a family’s patron saint. Celebrating Slava has been present among Serbs since the times before Christianization, when it was associated with the ancestor cult. In 2014 Slava was inscribed in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Saint Petka (Paraskeva) is considered to be the protector of women and marriage. According to the number of its celebrants it takes sixth place on the list of Serbian major Slavas.
The celebration of Slava in Academic Serbian Association included its teachers, associates and partners.
The second plaque for outstanding contribution and cooperation for 2021 presented
Besides marking of Slava and fifth anniversary of the Association, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the newspaper Serbian Mirror – Ogledalo, Chicago. Continuing in the style of our jubilees, Slavica Petrovic from Chicago has been presented with an appreciation plaque.
Since the founding of Association and the school, Slavica Petrovic and Ogledalo Chicago have been offering support to Academic Serbian Association. Moreover, this year is officially the beginning of cooperation in writing articles about Serbian language, history, culture and tradition for the Ogledalo newspaper.
